Gum Treatment

What is Gum Treatment?

Gum treatment, also known as Scaling and Root Planing (SRP) or deep cleaning, is the most effective method for treating periodontal (gum) disease. It involves cleaning the areas between the gums and teeth, right down to the roots. In many cases, a local anaesthetic is used to numb the area for a more comfortable experience during the procedure.

Who Needs Gum Treatment?

Individuals experiencing symptoms of gum disease—such as bleeding gums, bad breath, gum inflammation, or loose teeth—should undergo gum treatment. It’s essential for those diagnosed with periodontal disease to prevent further damage and restore gum health.

What are the Benefits of Gum Treatment?

SRP eliminates harmful plaque and tartar from deep gum pockets, helping gums reattach to the teeth. It reduces inflammation, stops gum disease from progressing, and improves overall oral health. When combined with good home care, it can significantly reduce the risk of tooth loss and maintain gum stability.

Post-Treatment Care:

Mild discomfort may last for up to 24 hours. Rinse every 2–4 hours with warm salted water (½ tsp salt in 8 oz warm water). Avoid brushing/flossing the treated areas for 1–2 days, then resume gentle cleaning. If symptoms persist or the disease is advanced, your dentist may refer you to a periodontist for further treatment, including surgery if necessary.

If you’re experiencing bleeding gums or gum sensitivity, a deep cleaning can help restore your oral health.
